Jillian Lauren on how being any kind of “stand out” can be both a curse, and the greatest blessing.
Jillian Lauren is the author of the new novel Pretty, as well as the memoir, Some Girls: My Life in a Harem. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Paris Review Daily, Vanity Fair, Flaunt Magazine and Opium Magazine, among others. She has performed at spoken word and storytelling events across the country and has been interviewed on shows like The View, Good Morning America and Howard Stern. She was a featured dancer with the infamous Velvet Hammer Burlesque. Jillian recently debuted her solo show Mother Tongue at the Steve Allen Theater in Los Angeles, where she lives with her husband and son.
