This is Grace Jones, at a stunning SEXTY-five years old, performing at the Queen’s Jubilee. She is pitch perfect on Slave to the Rhythm. Oh yeah, and she’s hula hooping. For the ENTIRE SONG.
I have a friend who has a friend who used to perform at Studio 54 back in its heyday. And on one occasion, this performer was opening for Grace Jones, and occupied the dressing room that Grace Jones thought she had exclusive rights to. But this opening performer would not budge from the dressing room. So as Grace Jones stormed out, she turned, eyes wide, and made horns with her fingers that she then proceeded to jab at this other person–so that it kind of looked like she was zapping him.
Onstage that night, as this opening performer was singing his heart out while surrounded by male dancers who were covered in gold paint, a light fixture suddenly fell from the ceiling and hit him on the head, knocking him out cold. When he came to, he was in the hospital and the first thing he saw when he woke up was several of his dancers, all still covered in gold paint. Bewildered, he managed to whisper, “What happened to me?” To which one of the gold dancers simply replied “Grace Jones put the hex on you.”
Well. She did.
